The foundation of therapy is building a supportive and trusting relationship in a safe environment. The therapeutic relationship can be the most useful tool for healing and growth. As a therapist, I bring a warm, compassionate and open hearted approach to the work. I believe that we all deserve to be seen and heard and this is especially important in the therapeutic relationship.
As a narrative therapist, I see life in the form of stories. Multiple stories help create our sense of self, our understanding of our relationships and our world. Using stories seems to be a natural way to connect with others. The beautiful thing about these stories is that we are the authors! We often repeat and retell stories of struggles, conflict, failure and pain. However, my hope is to help you retell the story and change the focus, find the strength and power each of us has within us. When we change the story, we have the power to change our life. Though narrative therapy is my primary therapeutic modality, I want to work with you to discover and create the most supportive and effective therapeutic interventions. Depending on your specific needs I may use a combination of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, as well as family systems therapy.
Below, Chimamanda Adichie, talks about the “danger of a single story,” whether it is about a people, a person or even the self. I do see us as multi-storied and uncovering those stories can be a learning, healing, growing experience.
